Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Design Engineer to join our client, a global leader in providing niche industrial design services, often to highly regulated industries such as nuclear. This permanent role is based near Bolton, the working hours are Monday to Thursday, 8am to 5pm, with 8am to 12pm on Fridays.

This pivotal position requires an individual capable of ensuring designs comply with specifications, adhere to all relevant standards and legislation, and fully consider the product lifecycle. The Senior Design Engineer will manage a team of engineers and be responsible for producing high-quality design outputs for purchasing, production, and operations.

The salary for this role is negotiable, ranging from £41K to £50K per annum, depending on experience. An extensive benefits package will also be provided, and remote or hybrid working arrangements may be available once candidates have settled into the team.

 

Key Responsibilities & Duties of a Design Engineer:

Design Leadership: Oversee the production of designs that meet product assurance requirements, while considering all stages of the product lifecycle, such as material limitations, manufacturability, installability, and operability. Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure the elimination of potential health and safety risks from designs in accordance with CDM regulations. Risk Management: Lead the development and review of Designer’s Risk Assessments, identifying and incorporating effective risk mitigation strategies. Quality Control: Check and approve design outputs (3D models, 2D drawings) in line with company processes, ensuring full compliance with the Engineering Handbook and BS 8888. Collaboration: Work closely with analysis engineers to ensure designs accurately reflect theoretical analysis, resolving any design issues and documenting changes according to company procedures. Design Process Oversight: Understand the build sequence for all design outputs prior to releasing them for production engineering. Review & Communication: Ensure that all design and manufacturability reviews are completed and documented, communicating design intent to the wider project team and stakeholders. Continuous Improvement: Support and drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department to enhance design capabilities and improve overall efficiency. Project Support: Maximise change capture within the department and ensure all project changes are recorded and appropriately managed. Customer Liaison: Provide ongoing support to project teams, liaising with customers as necessary and attending on-site/off-site customer meetings and shop floor visits as required. ISO 9001 Compliance: Ensure full adherence to Booth’s ISO 9001 procedures within the engineering department. Schedule Management: Take responsibility for achieving schedule adherence across all assigned projects, ensuring tasks are completed within set timeframes. Personal Development: Ensure the timely completion of personal objectives, contributing to the overall success of the department and business year-on-year. Administrative Responsibilities: Submit timesheets, manage absence/holiday requests, and prepare for 1-2-1 meetings in line with company protocols. Additional Duties: Perform any ad-hoc duties as required, in line with the grade of the role.

 

Essential Educational Qualifications of a Design Engineer:

Either:

  • Minimum HND in Engineering, with 10 years’ experience in industrial sheet/steel fabrications

or

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree (BEng Hons) in Engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering), with at least 6 years’ experience in industrial sheet/steel fabrications.

 

Technical Skills required to be a Design Engineer:

  • Proficient in Autodesk 3D Inventor, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Vault, with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong understanding of steel manufacturing techniques, including press brake limitations.
  • Knowledge of load paths, failure modes, and operating limits of steel structures and components.
  • Strong focus on quality and timely output.
  • Ability to write detailed reports and specifications.
  • Practical understanding of tolerance stacking and its application.
  • Familiarity with door performance testing standards and guides.
  • Knowledge of welding types, strengths, and limitations.

Leadership & Communication:

  • Proven ability to lead design teams, including managing engineers on projects of significant value (preferably > £500k).
  • Excellent communication skills, both internal and external, with strong presentation abilities.

Flexibility & Adaptability:

  • Willingness to work overtime to meet project deadlines when required.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with BIM.
  • Understanding of drive and control systems operating principles.
  • Ability to obtain SC clearance.
