We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our client, a global leader in providing niche industrial design services, often to highly regulated industries such as nuclear. This permanent role is based near Bolton, with a working schedule of Monday to Thursday, 7am to 5pm.
The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of mechanical design, including the creation of 3D models, general arrangement drawings, and design-for-manufacture outputs such as assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of materials, and as-built drawings. These designs will adhere to company procedures and customer specifications, ensuring accurate and compliant outputs that support purchasing, production, and operations.
The salary for this role is negotiable, with an expected starting point of around £39K per annum, depending on experience. An extensive benefits package will be provided, and remote or hybrid working arrangements may be available once candidates have settled into the team.
Responsibilities & Duties of a Mechanical Design Engineer:
- Design Excellence: Create designs that adhere to product assurance standards, fully considering every stage of the product lifecycle, including material limitations, manufacturability, installability, and operability.
- Health & Safety Compliance: Proactively eliminate potential health and safety risks from designs in line with CDM regulations.
- Risk Management: Develop comprehensive Designer’s Risk Assessments for each design, identifying and incorporating necessary mitigation measures to ensure safety and reliability.
- ISO 9001 Adherence: Maintain complete compliance with Booth’s ISO 9001 procedures, ensuring all engineering processes align with industry best practices.
- Schedule Adherence: Take responsibility for meeting deadlines and ensuring all actions assigned to your role are completed on schedule.
- Objective Achievement: Deliver personal and departmental objectives promptly, contributing to the overall goals and growth of the business year after year.
- Administrative Tasks: Submit timesheets, request sick leave, manage absence/holiday requests, and prepare for 1-2-1 meetings in accordance with company protocols.

- Additional Duties: Be flexible and take on any other ad-hoc tasks that may arise, ensuring they align with the scope and responsibilities of your role.
- 3D Modelling & Design Development: Develop precise 3D models using Autodesk Inventor to meet specific project demands and ensure effective design solutions.
- 2D Drawings for Manufacturing: Convert 3D models into detailed 2D drawings for both customer review and the internal/external manufacturing process, adhering to the Engineering Handbook and BS 8888 standards.
- Design Verification: Ensure that your designs, drawings, and models are accurate, clear, and fully ready for review before they are passed to the SQEP Design checker(s).
- Collaboration with Analysis Engineers: Work closely with analysis engineers to ensure that designs, models, and drawings reflect accurate theoretical analysis, addressing any design challenges and documenting changes according to company procedures.
- Production Alignment: Gain a thorough understanding of the build sequence for each design, ensuring the design outputs are prepared for smooth transition into production engineering.
- Design Reviews & Communication: Actively participate in design and manufacturability reviews, guiding the 3D model and communicating the design intent effectively to the wider project team.
- Continuous Improvement: Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing departmental design capabilities and boosting overall efficiency.
- R&D Support: Contribute to research and development activities, collaborating with peers and leadership to explore innovative design solutions for bespoke projects.
- Template Coordination: Confirm the appropriate door template with the Engineering Supervisor or Senior Engineer prior to starting work, ensuring all specifications are in place.
- Change Management: Ensure all project changes are captured and recorded within the department, maximizing the documentation of design modifications.
- Customer Liaison: Provide support to the wider project team, including liaising with customers as needed, ensuring a collaborative and responsive approach throughout the project lifecycle.
Educational Qualifications to be a Mechanical Design Engineer:
Either:
- Minimum HND in Engineering, plus 5 years’ experience in industrial sheet/steel fabrications,
or
- Minimum bachelor’s degree (BEng Hons) in Engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering), plus 3 years’ experience in industrial sheet/steel fabrications.
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in using Autodesk 3D Inventor, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Vault independently.
- Strong understanding of steel manufacturing techniques, including limitations (e.g., press brake).
- Knowledge of load paths, failure modes, and operating limits of steel structures/components.
- A focus on quality adherence and timely output.
- Proficient knowledge of BS 8888 for engineering drawings.
- Ability to compile coherent Designer’s Risk Assessments.
Flexibility & Communication:
- Willingness to work overtime to meet project timelines.
- Strong communication skills with both internal and external customers.
Desirable:
- Awareness of door performance testing standards and guides.
- Understanding of drive and control systems operating principles.
- Knowledge of welding types, strengths, and limitations.
- Experience with tolerance stacking and the practical application of tolerances.
- Ability to program templates using iLogic/VB.
- SC clearance or the ability to obtain it.
