Position: Lead Electrical Engineer

Salary: £50,000 - £60,000

Type: Permanent

We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to join a prestigious UK design and build contractor with over a century of industry expertise. This established firm has a strong track record of serving blue-chip clients across key sectors, including Water, Energy, and Pharmaceuticals, and plays a pivotal role in driving the UK's energy transition.

In this key position, you will spearhead electrical design on large-scale projects, ensuring adherence to industry standards while leading and mentoring a dedicated team. Your focus on safety and quality will be essential in optimising systems and delivering exceptional results.

Purpose

Take the lead on allocated projects, ensuring timely completion of LV design elements and material procurement within agreed deadlines. Oversee product conformity and commercial performance, aligning with company targets. Mentor and develop LV Design Engineers. Coordinate with other disciplines to deliver projects. Provide technical support and guidance pre- and post-sales.

Based at Warrington, the jobholder may need to spend time within other office locations and client sites as necessary to deliver the function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and strategies projects for timely and budget-compliant completion.
  • Maintain and update project commercial files and monthly progress reports.
  • Document changes and identify potential project risks.
  • Develop and take responsibility for LV design and engineering procedures/forms for project delivery.
  • Generate electrical design drawings and calculations based on client requirements, technical standards, and best practices.
  • Conduct technical reviews of electrical design drawings and calculations within the LV Engineering department.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on optimal solutions, collaborating with the Technical Manager to establish comprehensive system requirements.
  • Work with a team to create standards and tools to enhance productivity, improve quality, and ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Lead communication to keep the LV Engineering team updated on developments and standards.
  • Ensure adherence to the Technology QA system’s technical requirements through regular reviews and audits.
  • Perform intrusive site surveys of in-service LV assemblies and compile detailed reports on findings and requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of estimates, proposals, and tenders.
  • Conduct technical reviews of estimates, proposals, and tenders as needed.
  • Alert the LV Operations Director to significant commercial, technical, or contractual risks associated with projects.
  • Engage in regular LV Engineering meetings and attend weekly project planning and progress review meetings.
  • Prepare for and participate in project meetings as necessary.
  • Promote capabilities and foster relationships across business units to maximise cross-divisional opportunities.

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

  • Over 5 years as an LV Design Engineer (or equivalent experience).
  • Hands-on experience with Power Switchgear and Control Gear Assemblies.
  • Technical expertise in industrial power and control systems.
  • Proficient in Autodesk (AutoCAD) or Bentley (Microstation / Promis.e) and Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Strong communication skills at all levels, with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively.

Knowledge of:

  • Standards: BS EN 61439-2, BS EN 60947, BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).
  • Protective Devices: Selectivity and coordination.
  • Electrical Theory: Distribution, cable sizing, motor control techniques.
  • Programmable Logic Controllers: Systems and hardware.
  • Communication Networks: Protocols and architecture.
  • Network Fault Levels: LV Assembly short-circuit withstand strength.
  • Thermal Management: Power loss, heat dissipation, temperature-rise limits.
  • Earthing Systems: Practices and requirements.
  • Product Conformity: UKCA / CE Marking.
  • Project Management: Best practices.
  • Quality Assurance: ISO9001 QA systems.

 

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • HNC/HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (or equivalent through experience), providing a solid foundation in engineering principles and practices.

Preferred:

  • Pursuing a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, demonstrating a commitment to furthering expertise in the field.

 

  • Membership of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), reflecting dedication to professional development and adherence to industry standards.

 

  • Professional Registration as EngTech or IEng with the Engineering Council, highlighting competence and commitment to maintaining high standards of engineering practice.
