We’re currently supporting our client with a requirement for an Electrical Design Engineer to join their Greater Manchester division, overseeing the delivery of power systems projects to provide world-class technical solutions, underpinned by an exceptional standard of service.

With group companies located throughout the UK, USA and Singapore, our client's project management and service teams are continually working together to take on complex power distribution projects across international waters

This is a permanent placement with an innovative and growing company, and salaries are negotiable dependant on experience.

Your role as a Electrical Design Engineer:

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will be a key part of our client's design department, responsible for developing bespoke solutions for HV and LV switchgear engineering projects. Your tasks will include preparing detailed electrical wiring diagrams, schematics, single-line, and general arrangement layout drawings. You should have extensive knowledge and experience in HV/LV power distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers, protection, and associated equipment. Familiarity with the operation of circuit breakers (ACB, MCCBs) and applying this to project designs is essential.

Attention to detail and expertise are crucial as you support the project team in designing final solutions and providing recommendations tailored to each project. You will collaborate with various teams within the manufacturing and test departments, providing technical specifications and addressing queries to ensure a high-quality product. Upholding professional standards, you will champion the business and assist the management team in implementing policies and procedures. You should be accountable, solutions-oriented, and proactive, working efficiently under pressure to meet high standards and deadlines.

Electrical Design Engineer responsibilities:

  • Developing electrical design concepts using the necessary tools and programs (AutoCAD)
  • Prepare concepts and electrical solutions for switchgear projects up to 11kV based on customer specifications and in accordance with applicable standards
  • Layout and configuration of switchgear and switchboards follow design processes developed by Client
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret customer drawings/specifications, and define the layout and configuration of switchgear and switchboards
  • To design parts and assemblies while meeting cost and quality targets.
  • Explore and evaluate alternate solutions
  • Collaborate with the mechanical design engineer on certain projects
  • Support Test Department to ensure designs meet with client specifications
  • Preparing the documentations for the PM to issue to the client / production department
  • Provide support to the project management team from concept + quoting through to producing final ‘as built’ documentation.
     

Electrical Design Engineer skills:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in design of switchgear projects (Experience in Medium Voltage Switchgears will be plus)

  • Ability to create technical CAD drawings using industry leading software systems

  • Detailed, proactive and solutions orientated Analytical mindset with strong planning and self-learning skills

  • Ability to work with different projects at the same time and prioritise work according to changing demands of the department

Familiarity with:

  • Modbus and TCP/IP communications protocols, and RS-485 and Ethernet interfaces
  • Application of power circuit monitoring equipment
  • Application of protective relaying, including over/under voltage, phase loss, frequency, G99, and sync check
  • Application of Automatic Changeover Circuits for Circuit Breakers (ACB’s, MCCB’s)
  • MV protection relays

Preferred but not essential:

  • Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practice and industry performance standards
  • Experience of developing and managing systems such as ISO 9001, 14001 & 18001/45001 through accredited bodies
  • Ability to build relationships and influence people at all levels, to drive continuous improvements and behavioural change through the organisation.
