Location: Staffordshire Office with occasional travel to site for installation

Salary: £35,000-54,000 / year

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

Our client, a prominent company in the gas supply industry, is currently managing a substantial order book, which translates into excellent career prospects. In recent years, the client has significantly expanded its operations to include waste-to-energy initiatives through biogas production, and more recently, advancements in hydrogen substitution.

We are seeking two highly skilled Software Engineer to join our client’s team. The successful candidate will be involved in the design, development, testing, and commissioning of PLC-based control systems, covering the complete system development lifecycle from initial design to customer site acceptance. This role is primarily based in our Staffordshire office, with occasional travel to client premises required for software installation or meetings.

Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, are essential, as is a flexible approach to working practices. You should be able to adapt to various working environments and tasks, demonstrating strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently. The role demands a proactive attitude and the capability to handle challenges with a problem-solving mindset, ensuring the successful completion of projects and customer satisfaction.

Primary Duties:

  • Design, documentation, development, testing, and commissioning of PLC-based control systems.
  • Manage the complete system development lifecycle from initial design through to customer site acceptance.

Secondary Duties:

  • Investigate and rectify defects at customer sites.
  • Provide support and assistance to other engineering disciplines within the design team.
  • Attend Design Working Groups.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in a software-related engineering discipline or equivalent experience with software-based control systems.
  • Experience with IE61131-3 programming languages.
  • Familiarity with the complete software/systems design lifecycle.
  • Proficient in interpreting and working with P&ID and electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of network/serial communications protocols and process control.
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home, including overnight stays.

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of PLC hardware, instrumentation, and electrical troubleshooting (primarily 24VDC).
  • Understanding of structured or Object-Oriented programming languages.
  • Experience with the MODBUS protocol.
  • Familiarity with National Grid design standards.
